I try to blog at least once every month but it seems like my last blog was in early December 2011, and today is already the last day of February! It had been a hectic period for the past two months with house moving, travels, kids starting school, etc. I am pretty much settled into the new year's routine now and have started to think about beading again.

Honestly, I have not beaded for awhile. In fact I have been busy making little crafts around the house, like fabric notice boards, canvas art pieces, cushion covers and my latest obsession is to make tissue box covers. The idea came about because I was trying to look for covers to cover up the tissue boxes but couldn't find any over here. I saw some designs back in Singapore but they were too busy for my taste. So, I decided to sew it myself. It did take some trial and error to finally come up with the product. Here are the three I have sewed.

My favourite has to be the centre one with the retro space prints. My sons love anything about space/solar system and has a space theme for their bedroom so this cover couldn't have been more appropriate!

Now that I have completed the sewing bit, I have to start on some beading projects soon. I just received a lovely package from Lisa Peter Arts. Here are some of the goodies that I have bought.

Cabochons

My photograph did not do justice to these beautiful art pieces especially the donuts. The colours are very rich and every piece is artistically created! I look forward to creating something out of them soon!

Onyx Orange Cuff

This is an embroidered cuff using Orange & Red seed beads to bead around Onyx cabochons. I have created a scallop effect on both sides as the embroidery tapered off at the ends.

Goldie Orange Cuff

For this piece, I had done a herringbone flat band using Orange & Supra Gold seed beads. The design is simply blocks of gold beads to break up the orange base. The band is then sewn onto an ultrasuede and completed by bead embroidery round the metal cuff.

Turquoise Orange Cuff

Turquoise! How can I forget my favourite Turquoise and it actually works very well with the bright Orange. This piece is more elaborated with layers of different colours and types of seed beads. The tiny teardrop cabochons added accents to the piece.

Bricky Cuff

This brick-stitched band was actually completed awhile ago. While I like the design of the piece, I did not like it being a soft bracelet. So, I recycled the piece by transforming it into a bead embroidered cuff.

Goldie Raku Cuff

The cuff is centered around three beautiful Raku cabochons created by Lisa Peters Arts. It is hard to describe Raku pieces because each and every one of them is so unique and full of character. These light Olive cabochons are combined with Tigereye cabochons to create a warm Gold coloured cuff.

Background
I bought this beautiful rectangular Swarovski crystal rivoli a few years ago with the intention to bead weave around it. I did create a bezel for it but was never satisfied with the result and kept it away in my stash. Till recently, while corresponding with Belinda Saville, I thought of the rivoli and asked if she can custom make a ring with it. My requests were to draw the design inspiration from one of her works, a beautiful faceted Azurite Malachite ring and a wide ring band.

Result
Belinda never fails to surprise me with her excellent craftmanship. The finished ring is absolutely gorgeous and the filigree details at the sides of the ring add an intricate touch to this "chunky" ring. Belinda had to build a pretty tall bezel to accommodate the height of the rivoli but trust me, the ring does not look clumsy at all. In fact, I call it "petite chunky". It rests very nicely and comfortably on the finger.

I have received a few queries on my thoughts about the ring and all I can say is that it is PERFECT for me! I took Belinda's good advice to have the ring patinaed. I can definitely wear it from smart casual to formal occasions.

AGUA NUEVA AGATE CABOCHON

Background
In one of Belinda's Facebook posts, she showed a collection of Agate cabochons. One particular stone, known as the Agua Nueva Agate caught my fancy. The fact that I kept going back to the page to admire the stone affirmed my "want" that I have to get it! It has a very lovely lavender colour with natural lines in the design. It is in a unique semi-circle shape which makes it perfect as a pendant. So, the cabochon was sold to me!

Collaboration
When I ordered the pendant, I had intended to bead weave the chains myself. I bought several kinds of metal seed beads in silver, nickel and brass but none works because the silver does not match with the pendant. Eventually, I had to settle for my all-time favourite, Czech Supra Gold! The Supra Gold beads' colour is almost identical to the gold nuggets.

Herringbone Stitched Chains

I beaded the chain in 3 segments (on each side) with tubular Herringbone stitch, and connected them with an interlocking design using White Gold Plated Delicas. It was a subtle effort to break up the gold chain so that it does not overpower the whole necklace.

Result
I love the soft curves that Belinda has designed at the bottom of the pendant and added the gold nuggets. The incorporation of the gold complements the warm lines on the cabochon very nicely. The cabochon itself is a beauty. It is highly-polished with depth of lines that gives the cabochon a 3D effect!

I love long necklaces and I love it even more when I can bead-weave the beads together. These two ropes are my latest creations and every bead was woven together (not strung) to form a contemporary piece of adornment.

The warm Sponge Coral (red) gemstones were stitched with Supra Gold seed beads using Russian Spiral technique while the cool Aquamarine (blue) rondelles were stitched with permanent finish Silver seed beads using Spiral Rope technique.

It is pretty addictive beading these necklaces and a third one is in the making.

Necklace - Netted Metallic Pearls "Debbie"

Remember my "Debbie" bracelet? This necklace was stitched using the same freshwater pearls dyed in silver (bought from CrysallisGems) with 22kt white gold plated Delicas. It is a matte silverish necklace but the tinge of purple hues from the pearls make it a striking piece.

I have no idea what gotten me to bead this necklace with Size 15 seed beads (1mm). Seems to take me forever and how glad I was when I finally completed it.

This is a simple Endless Spiral Rope (I call it endless because no clasp was used) in black seed beads with a mix of Swarovski crystals and crystal pearls. The idea behind it was to use up the odd number of beads I have in my collections. I want to use up my existing beads in my creations first and trying very hard (just made a purchase yesterday!) to buy any new beads for now.

Silver Jewellery Workshop Day 4

My soldered rings created at last Saturday's workshop. The brass ring is kept plain while I added patterns on the silver ring. It was an amazing session where we learnt to solder the metal and eventually turn it into a seamless and sparkling ring! I certainly had alot of help from the instructor.

This would be my last project on the silversmithing course since I am unable to attend next week's last workshop.

For today's workshop, we recreated the leaf pendant in 925 silver and learnt to solder the jump ring. I am happier with how the leaf turned out this time. The soldering was challenging and I definitely need more practice to get that right.

Silver Jewellery Workshop Day 2

Day 2 of the workshop requires us to recreate the same anticlastic ring (which we did last week) with silver metal. The process of making the ring is the same except no annealing is needed since it is a moderately soft metal. When polished, it has a brilliant lustrous shine. Here's my ring!

For part 2 of the session, we made a copper Leaf motif pendant and some jump rings. Honestly, I didn't like what I have done. I have no idea why I had drawn and sawed out such an unattractive leaf design! I should have also hammered the sides of the "leaf" to give it more depth and curves. We will be making a similar leaf pendant using silver next week, so hopefully I will do a better job.

Howlite gemstone is believed to be a calming stone that can help relieve stress of all kinds and negativity. Often mistaken for turquoise, and often intentionally misrepresented as turquoise, howlite occurs naturally as a white or gray stone with dark stripes. However, because of its porous minerals, it absorbs dyes easily.

This cuff was bead embroidered with 5 round Howlite cabochons and complemented with bronze, gold and red seed beads. The inspiration for the colourway comes mainly from the cabochon itself; the faint brown lines on it sets the tone of the palette. The cuff edging was finished with a dark red Picasso seed beads as a highlight. This time round, I have used a pre-formed brass cuff which gives it a sturdier shape to the cuff.

So, if you are feeling upset, wear it and the howlites will help you keep those emotions at bay.

Silver Jewellery Workshop Day 1

Today is my first lesson at the 'Silver Jewellery' workshop. It is an introductory course for beginners on silversmithing, conducted at the Central Institute of Technology. The instructor started the lesson on health and safety issues and then went onto the tools, machines, functions, etc. The technical information was overwhelming and I was starting to get worried if I could even manage to create a piece.

For today's project, we have to create an Anticlastic Ring. Through the process of creating the ring, we learnt to use the jewellers saw, bench pin, files, make and use sanding stick, anneal the metal with a torch, form and finally polish. I found the most difficult part was sawing the design out of the metal sheet. I broke 6 saw blades in total (I was told it is normal to break the blade) and I didn't do a perfect cut on my piece. Fortunately, the filing bit and little tricks took care of the little imperfections, and by the end of the whole process, I was totally amazed by how the plain piece of metal got transformed into a gold ring! That's instant gratification!

The ring can still be improved in many ways but I am happy with how it turns out, being my very first project. It makes me realise and appreciate the efforts behind creating a piece of metal jewellery.

I enjoyed today's workshop and already looking forward to the next class! :)

Gracing our site's homepage is a beautiful photo taken by my good friend, Lis (Simple Arts Planet).

The photo features my creation, Serpentine donut bracelet (made for Lis) that hangs off at the edge of a beautiful Chinese wedding jewellery case. Lis has very kindly helped me with this photo shoot despite her busy schedule. I have a soft spot for long necklaces. They are easy to put on and a great accessory to any wardrobe. I have recently completed two necklaces; one is the 3-tier long necklace using Picasso glass rondelles in Turquoise and Red and the other is a Herrinbone/Peyote stitched links using seed beads in Travertine (looks like picasso beads) colours.

I particularly like the Mustard Links necklace. I know not many take to mustard colour very well but somehow I really like this very natural looking beads in the dull yellow tone. Wear it against a white shirt will really bring out the beauty of the colour!

A Birthday Present

This necklace was made specially for my good friend, Lis' (owner of Saplanet Originals) birthday in October. I had wanted to pass the present to her personally during the recent trip to Singapore. Alas, we were both busy and didn't get to meet, and in the end had to send it to her by mail.

Lis didn't know what I was making for her except that it would be a piece of jewellery. Honestly, I was totally clueless on what to create and for a few months, I was considering a few designs and materials, and even "bluffed" Lis into giving me opinions so that I can create something she likes.

Three weeks before my departure to Singapore, I came across a supplier selling small Serpentine donuts. Those donuts were the exact stone I had used to create Lis' bracelet previously. I thought it would be perfect to use them for a long necklace and the colour is so "Lis" (as I know it).

I used Spiral Rope technique to create the opera length necklace. Besides the Serpentine donuts, the other accent beads are a mix of Butterscotch citrine rondelles (Lis' favourite stone) and Czech Picasso green hues glass beads. All were stitched up with TOHO Antique Brass seed beads to give it a very natural look.

I am very happy with how the necklace turned out. In fact, after I modeled with the necklace and took the photo, I was having second thoughts on giving it to Lis! Don't you think it fits my outfit in this photo? :)

Lis has received the present and is very happy with it. She has written a beautiful blog on it and took many lovely photos on the piece. Thank you, Lis!

Silver Pearls Bracelet - "Debbie"

You have probably seen similar weaved bracelets like this before. I have done it differently by netting it in a horizontal manner and used 4mm beads instead of seed beads. These beautiful silver pearls were bought from Debbie (CrysallisGems). I used about 4.5 strands for this 8" cuff. The bead holes are uniform but I would suggest using Size 13 needle to bead instead of Size 12 needle as the former is finer. I broke 10 needles altogether trying to squeeze threads into the bead hole while weaving the needle in and out of the pearls.

Although the pearls are labelled silver, it has a nice mauve metallic sheen on its surface, which made them very unique. I have embellished the bracelet with Czech glass seed beads in faceted white opal.

The use of these two materials is not overpowering, so you can wear the bracelet as an everyday accessory, adding a tiny glimpse of glamour to your outfit!

Golden Pearly Netted Necklace

In celebration of my project featured in Bead & Button Magazine August 2011 issue, I have created a netted necklace using the instructions (the construction of the necklace is slightly different from my previous manual) from the magazine.

I used pure 14kt gold-filled beads throughout the necklace. These beads have a very nice matte finish and look more champagne than gold.

A Stunning Ring

I like the look of stack rings, simple yet versatile. While there are many talented artists at Etsy who make lovely stack rings, none of them has really caught my fancy until I saw Belinda Saville's silversmithed Ruby ring.

I do not know Belinda personally but have been reading her blog and ogling over her beautiful bead woven jewellery previously. She now does silver-smithing mainly and makes one-of-a-kind pieces. I contacted Belinda to express my interest to custom make a stack ring. We started corresponding and eventually decided on a cluster of 3 stones on one ring band (not a stack ring anymore). Belinda has an exquisite collection of stones and I chose two Rubies and Raspberry Rhodolite stones for the ring. She did try to tempt me with her yummy turquoise stones (really beautiful, faceted ones!) but I stood firm, as I have made myself too many turquoise rings!

All I can say about the ring is that it is perfect! The craftmanship was superb, the ring fits me nicely, it turned out the way I had envisioned and the artist behind it is simply wonderful! It was a joy corresponding with Belinda and I am very glad to have the chance to know her better.

This is the shorter version of the 3-tier necklace that we will make during the '3-Tier Endless Necklace' class (17 Jul, 1.30pm - 3.30pm, Beads Cage in Singapore). Students will be able to choose between silver and opal green glass or supra gold and opal green glass (as shown). For beaders who would like to purchase the long version necklace kits, an email will be sent out later.

Clustered Cuff (FULL CLASS)

Bead Embroidery with whip stitch – A faster, neater and prettier finishing. You will learn the basics of bead embroidery on three cabochons of different sizes with seed beads and stitched together to form a clustered design, to be mounted on a bracelet blank (sample photo will be updated soon).

Level: Beginner (this is different from my previous bead embroidery workshops, so experienced beaders are also welcome to learn the whip stitch method.)

Learn how to use Diamond Stitch to stitch up a beautiful cuff, with hidden clasp, so that is looks seamless. Different variations and materials will be discussed on how they can change the patterns.

Ruffles Bracelet (FULL CLASS)

Using the technique of tubular netting, you will learn how to create a netted chain and embellish with luxurious amounts of glass and seed beads. Both the Pearly Netted Necklace (which will be published in August Bead & Button Magazine) and the Green Opal necklace will also be discussed.

Black Doilies

I have been wanting to make an all Black Doilies for awhile. The opportunity came when Beads Cage asked me to make a project sample to be placed at the shop so that beaders can view the jewellery before buying the project kit.

The steps to creating this necklace is similar to my original picasso beaded piece. It is made up of true-cut (with facets) opaque black seed beads and Swarovski crystals in black. However, this set has two smallest doilies short, only because I was running out of time before sending it across to Beads Cage. The placement of the individual doilies is also sharper.

Strung Red Turquoise Necklace

This is a back to basics necklace which took me a pretty short time to complete. I had initially wanted to knot the rondelles but the holes in the beads are so uneven that I couldn't find a suitable thread diameter to do the knotting. I settled on stringing the beads up. To cover up the exposed wire after stringing, I added a 11/0 seed bead at every interval. The beads are Red Turquoise gemstones.

I enjoy creating long necklaces. They are contemporary and easy to wear. These two necklaces are my latest addition, using spiral rope. Like my other "endless" spiral ropes, there are no clasps attached to these necklaces.

Iznik Pendant

When I first saw this cabochon, the flower design reminded me of the Iznik tiles found on the walls of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey. The classic palette of blue and red adds a strong punch to this ceramic cabochon and it is hard to resist not creating something out of it!

I used bead embroidery to stitch up this cabochon with seed beads in bronze/gold/beige. The pendant was completed with a square stitched bail. I was planning to stitch a necklace chain but decided otherwise. I did not want to draw the attention away from pendant, so had it hung over a silk cord in the same deep red. I think it works beautifully.

Bollywood Green Opal

I love doing custom orders as they are tailored to the customers' likes and the piece remains a mystery until it is completed. This Bollywood Green Opal is no exception. My lovely customer has purchased the Green Opal Necklace and wanted a matching bracelet to go with it. She has chosen the 'Bollywood Cuff' design but using the same beads as the Green Opal.

Bollywood Green Opal was created with Right Angle Weave and 3mm beads (instead of 4mm) were used. Each RAW square was made smaller with only 12 beads in a square to accomodate the smaller 3mm bead. The width of the cuff was also extended to 6.5 cm, 12 squares in a row. I completed the cuff with 2 Swarovski crystal buttons to add glamour to it.

I actually like it more than my original Bollywood cuff!
